Day 1 - August 8, 2007
August 2007 trip to the UP.

This was a travel day. No photos here.
We headed for the Munising Tourist Park on the shores of Lake Superior.

Day 2 - August 9, 2007
August 2007 trip to the UP.

What would a trip to the UP be without the Pictured Rocks Boat tour?
This first shot shows the Miner's Castle with the now missing tower that fell into the lake last year.

The section of the Miner's Castle has some interesting caves.
Lower water levels in Lake Superior probably revealed a lot more of these.

Another cave here but much larger that the ones below the Miner's Castle as the size of the 2 kayak's shows.
That would be a fun way to explore the lakeshore.

These next two pictures show some of the typical cliffs and colors from various elements leaching out of the sandstone.
I wonder what would be said if this leaching was due to manmade sources?

Here is an arch created by wave and wind erosion.
The lake was very calm the day we went and that allowed us to get very close to the cliffs.
The boat entered a small cove not much wider than the boat.
In all my trips on the boats, only one other time were we able to do that.

This is the Indianhead rock formation.

Another arch but the roof of this one collapsed some years ago.
I guess that is reason 3 why I don't rent a kayak.

The next two pictures show interesting formations reminiscent of flower pots.
Notice the roots from the tree extending back to the main part of the shore in the second picture.

I like this picture because of seagulls almost blend in against the cliff.

The final sight on the boat tour is always the old light house.

After the boat tour we found a small store that sold the "Best Pasties in the UP."
At least someone voted them such a title. They were very good and the four of us ate for $21.00.
We felt they were good enough to go back on our way home to buy more.

We then made a stop at Wagner falls just south of Munising.

On to the Big Springs State Park for the last stop of the first day.
The raft is still self powered, the fish still like it there and the springs still bubble up under the 40 feet of water you are looking through here.

This Osprey managed to get his catch of the day.
We spotted the bird off the side of the road after we left Big Springs. It appears the fish was a fresh catch.

Day 3 - August 10, 2007
August 2007 trip to the UP.

This was a travel day. No photos here.
We left the Munising Tourist Park after spending 2 nights there and headed to Baraga State Park.
On the way we stopped over in the metropolis of Marquette to shop at Walmart, got lunch at Perkins, and bought a pie for later.
We stopped at the Yoopers Tourist Trap in Ishpeming. The displays of unique Yooper-isms has deteriorated over the years.
That stop proved to be a challenge to a motor home towing a car - but we prevailed in the end.
After checking into Baraga, we went up to Houghton for a quick in car tour of the MTU campus, Houghton and Hancock.
We ended up in the Ambassador (bar/restaurant) for beer and pizza.
We walked down the street to the Douglas-Houghton House (Dog house) for another beer.

Day 4 - August 11, 2007
August 2007 trip to the UP.

Day 4 was the part of the trip I looked forward to more than any other.
The walk into my favorite area - Canyon Falls - revealed just how dry it was in the UP.
Almost no water going over the falls. Much of the exposed rock is normally very wet.
This first picture is taken at the lowest part of the canyon below the falls.

We ventured a few yards farther down the top of the canyon area and saw some new territory.
In the second picture, note the rope on the far right had side of the picture!

We found this growth on a birch tree along our pathway.
I thnk they were puff balls similar to what grows on the ground. Anyone able to ID this?
We did have at least one other description for this growth....

The next goal for the day was an area I had tried to find once before but had not succeeded.
The Sturgeon River Gorge is about 20 miles downstream from Canyon Falls
and is located in the middle of the Baraga Plains.
It is described as the deepest valley in Michigan. Here is a view from an overlook area called the "Bears Den."

Sturgeon Falls is located at the bottom of the gorge.
It is a hike of about a mile along an unmarked trail.
We took the steep path going down but opted for the easier path going out.

The falls is a series of cascades that lead to a narrow pass between a glacial rock opening about 6 feet wide.
Some travel brochure accounts indicate the narrow opening makes for very deep water below the falls
that allows brave people to do a little cliff diving.

Once we got to the bottom of the gorge, the rain that been threatening came down quite hard.

I got to the bottom and took a few pictures.
The first here has a normal shutter speed while the second had a slow shutter speed for effect.

As we headed out of the gorge, the rain quit.
I took this shot of some large pines on the side of the gorge.
I see a need to return to this location. The location is saved in my GPS.

Our final stop for the day was Bond Falls.
There were many people of all ages in the water, so it was not as fun as past trips and taking pictures with no one in view was a challenge.
They have made major improvements to this park with large viewing decks and a parking lot at the bottom of the falls area.

Day 5 - August 12, 2007
August 2007 trip to the UP.

The Falls at Eagle River is all but dry - a small trickle is at the right side.
Compare this view to these pictures (and a video) from 2005 when more water flowed.

A Laker can be seen in the distance.

The Eagle Harbor Lighthouse is another of my favorite picture spots.

We found a couple left over Thimbleberries, so we got a chance to taste them.

We made the required trip up Brockway, stopping to view Copper Harbor on the way.

Day 6 - August 13, 2007
August 2007 trip to the UP.

The morning we were leaving for home, we saw these two Pileated Woodpeckers (I think)
in the next campsite feasting on ants in the tree.
The picture was taken into the sun through the windshield of the motor home so it is not as clear as I would like.
